Industrial history

The 'Werkspoor Cathedral'. Very rightly the winner of the Rietveld Architectural prices 2017. A former NS railroad workshop in an industrial corner in Utrecht (the Netherlands). In 2014 real estate owner Bob Scherrenberg acquired the building and after extensive renovations it now started its second life.

The enormous space is now used for large scale events en TV productions such as the NOS 2014 year review (The making-of van het NOS Jaaroverzicht). MONK architects designed the new spaces including additional spaces for small creative companies.

The images are from the 'Day of architecture 2017'. The portrait image is a cropped version of the landscape image en shows the impact of the way an image can be cropped.

The landscape image shows the immensity of the space as a whole. The portrait shows emphasis the height of the space. This is achieved through the focus on the columns and the persons standing next to the columns. The provide a sense of scale and although these persons are also in the landscape image the don't have the same effect there.
My rule of the thumb: landscape emphasizes horizontal elements and portrait emphasizes vertical elements.
